Neymar has stunned Paris St Germain by admitting his desire to leave the French club before the end of this window. The future of the Brazilian superstar has been source of intense speculation over the last few weeks. Neymar, though, has been linked with a return back to Barcelona for several months. Sky Sports have confirmed that Neymar has revealed his wish to PSG sporting director Leonardo.
Barcelona may have been linked with a move to sign the Brazilian, but it remains to be seen if the Spanish outfit can prepare a £150 million plus offer for 27-year-old in the next few weeks. Barcelona have just brought an Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid for around £108 million. The club even admitted taking a loan of around £30 million in order to make the stance of possible. In such a scenario, the club may struggle to raise funds to make the extravagant signing of Neymar.
PSG have not yet made a formal statement regarding the player, but the club have also not received any formal offer from Barcelona.
Neymar made the switch to PSG just two summers ago for a world record transfer fee of £200 million. After failing to emerge from the shadows of Lionel Messi during his time with Barcelona, it was expected that the move to PSG would help Neymar achieve his ultimate target of picking up the Ballon d’Or award. Yet, PSG’s struggles in Europe coupled with the arrival of Kylian Mbappe have only seen Neymar’s stock go down rather than rising up.
In his two seasons with PSG, Neymar has even failed to get more than 30 goals per campaign. The Brazilian managed 2018 goals in 30 appearances in his debut season but this dropped to 23 goals in 28 games last season. For most of the 2018-19 season, it was Mbappe who grabbed all the attention and limelight. It was fast becoming apparent that Neymar had made the wrong move. Rather than wait, it appears that Neymar has decided to take the plunge and look for new pastures.
Neymar was regarded as the next Pele when he came through the ranks at Santos. However, the man with a bag of tricks has not been able to convert his incredible talent into goals. Lionel Messi was able to come up with goal after goal for Barcelona while Neymar struggled for consistency. Even if a return to Barcelona is not on the cards, Real Madrid may come in with an offer for the Brazilian.
Despite signing Eden Hazard from Chelsea, Zinedine Zidane remains in the market for outstanding talent. The club also have a problem with getting Gareth Bale off the books. The Welshman could be made part of the deal to bring Neymar to the Santiago Bernabeu. Barcelona could also take a similar approach by making Philippe Coutinho part of the deal to bring in Neymar. The future of winger Ousmane Dembele is also under a lot of doubt.
Neymar’s move to Parc des Princes happened all too quickly and it seems that history is repeating itself.
