Barcelona appeared to suffer defeat in their efforts to bring Neymar, but the transfer saga could be resumed this summer, according to latest reports. Even after months of negotiations, the Spanish champions were unable to re-sign the superstar, who broke the transfer record when he made the €222 million switch to PSG in 2017. The Catalan outfit offered close to €130 million along with a couple of players in a bid to bring him back to the Camp Nou, but that tactic failed with PSG only keen on a cash offer.

Neymar was frozen out of the PSG first-team when negotiations were in full swing. The striker even offered to pay around €20 million – from his own pocket – in order to make the transfer possible. It seemed that he had gone to the point of no return. However, Neymar made a successful comeback to the team and he has been crucial to a lot of victories already.

Barcelona were unable to extend their bid for Neymar due to financial restrictions caused by the transfers of Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong and Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann. This time around, the club are not ready to make the same mistake and Neymar is set to become the priority. It is partly down to Griezmann’s failure to settle at the Camp Nou. A paltry return of eight goals in 23 games for Griezmann has forced a rethink within the Barca camp.

Neymar has more goals for PSG than Griezmann even when playing in a few number of games this season. Furthermore, the Brazilian also has had to contend with a large section of supporters still against his inclusion in the team.

However, there has been a stark decline in Neymar’s transfer value. The Brazilian will soon be 28 years old. This significantly cuts down his resale value if he makes a move in the upcoming summer. Furthermore, Neymar has just over two years left on his contract. His form in the upcoming Champions League knockout stages can also have a dramatic impact on his transfer value. Since PSG have not had much success in these latter stages of the Champions League, it is highly likely that Neymar’s stock will drop.

Neymar was brought to the Parc des Princes as a key player who can help the club win the Champions League. However, the club have been unable to get past the last 16 stage in the last three editions. In fact, PSG have never been able to go past the Champions League quarter-finals in this century.

PSG demanded the entire €222 million in order to sell back Neymar, but those demands are likely to be relaxed a bit in order to recoup as much transfer fee as possible. Meanwhile, Barcelona are preparing to offload players and raise around €200 million.

A potential exit of Neymar can also have a big impact on the future of Kylian Mbappe, who is a strong target of Real Madrid. PSG will be reluctant to lose two major stars in one transfer window.
